Residents around the region gathered together and turned their eyes skyward on Monday to witness the first solar eclipse to cross the continental United States in almost a century.
People gathered in Founder’s Park in downtown Johnson City and in front of the old courthouse in historic Jonesborough to witness the event, which reached its peak at 2:36 p.m. While the Washington County School System dismissed early, students at all 11 Johnson City schools headed outside with their teachers to watch the moon pass over the face of the sun.
