In front of home crowds and with state softball tournament berths on the line, University High and Daniel Boone’s squads both came up short over the weekend in season-ending losses to Midway and Corryton Gibbs.
After rain postponed both games, the Lady Bucs fell 10-0 in six innings to a hot-hitting Midway team Saturday in the Class A division. An error-plagued first put the team in a 3-0 hole from which it could not recover.
Sunday at Boone, the Lady Blazers battled back and forth with perennial power Gibbs before a groundout in the top of the seventh gave Gibbs speedster Leah Sohm enough time to score. Daniel Boone, which had taken a 5-3 lead with a four-run fifth, stranded one runner in the bottom of the seventh and finished the season 32-14.
University High had difficulty hitting Midway starter Raygn Hall, while Midway frequently put balls in play against UH senior Lexi Crouthers. Several miscues compounded UH’s difficulties, and by the time the team loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, they were down 9-0. A groundout led to Ari Ramsaran being forced out at home and the potential rally fizzled.
