Local Vietnam veterans gathered at the Johnson City/Washington County Veterans Memorial on Monday for a Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony hosted by the American Legion Kings Mountain Post 24.

The ceremony offered veterans an opportunity to reflect on their service and honor their brothers in arms who lost their lives in action or never returned. Ralph Moats and Allen Jackson read the names of the 58 service members from Washington County who were killed in Vietnam while Johnny Ayers rang a bell as each name was read.

During the proceedings, Art Fowler recounted his experience of returning home from Vietnam only to be greeted with disdain upon his arrival. Monday’s ceremony offered the community a chance to thank Fowler and his fellow veterans for the sacrifices they made for our nation.
