City leaders gathered at Liberty Bell Middle School on Monday to break ground on a new gym and cafeteria complex that will allow Johnson City to proceed with a plan to move to a two-middle-school system.

The project is expected to be completed in 18 months and is considered the first step in a plan to make both Liberty Bell and Indian Trail 5-8 grade middle schools. Johnson City superintendent Steve Barnett said the plan could go into effect in time for the 2021-22 school year.

The project will also allow Freedom Hall Civic Center to be used during the school day.
