The Lenoir Empire Furniture team was ready for action on Saturday.

The past year has been hard on everyone, but it has been particularly tough on children.

In an instant, they found themselves learning virtually, and opportunities to participate in recreational activities were few and far between.

But this spring has brought fresh hope to all of us. The COVID-19 pandemic is showing signs of waning, which has allowed some normalcy to creep back into our daily lives.

A sure sign of spring was on full display at TVA Credit Union Ballpark last Saturday morning. The sun was out as roughly 300 youngsters in the newly formed Johnson City National-Major Little League filed out onto the field for opening day ceremonies.

Parents pulled up socks and helped tie the laces on baseball cleats. They tugged on pant legs and tucked in uniform tops before sending their kids scrambling out to join their respective teams in the outfield. The players’ energy could barely be contained during the ceremony as the National Anthem was played and the first pitch was thrown out.

Later in the afternoon, they reported to fields around Johnson City and got busy getting back to doing what kids are meant to do.

They played.
