An Independence Day tradition in Johnson City is set to light the fuse on its 34th year.
Pepsico Beverages and the City of Johnson City are sponsoring the 34th annual Independence Day Fireworks Celebration on the grounds of Freedom Hall Civic Center on Thursday, July 4. The event is free of charge, and everyone is invited to join the festivities.
Since several thousand people attend the event each year, an early arrival is strongly encouraged. There will not be a rain date for this event, so the start time might be delayed in the event of inclement weather, and visitors could be moved inside Freedom Hall temporarily in the event of severe weather.
The city’s transit department will provide free shuttle bus service to and from the event. Buses will transport people to Freedom Hall from both the ETSU parking lot on the corner of State of Franklin and University Parkway and the parking lot at Winged Deer Park. Buses will run from 5 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. before returning guests to their respective lots following the fireworks at 9:55 p.m.
Food service and other activities will begin on the grounds of Freedom Hall at 5 p.m. There will be live music between 6 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to register for a variety of prizes between 5-7 p.m.
Those attending should bring their items in a clear bag, as all other bags will be subject to search. Handicapped parking passes will be available to those who call Freedom Hall at 423.461.4884 no later than Tuesday, July 2. Traffic, both pedestrian and vehicle, is expected to be heavy around Freedom Hall before, during and after the event. Motorists should use caution navigating on the streets around Freedom Hall on July 4.
