Quillen College of Medicine Students meet their match

The Class of 2018 at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine enjoyed an emotional and fulfilling rite of passage last Friday when they found out where they will be assigned to complete their residency training programs, which start on July 1.

Joining medical students across the country, Quillen students received the results of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) shortly before 1 p.m. on what is commonly referred to as “Match Day.”

The NRMP pairs graduating medical students with residency programs throughout the country. The Class of 2018 enjoyed a successful match rate, with 96 percent of the class securing residency training positions in 17 different specialties/sub-specialties at 42 residency sites throughout the United States.

Twenty-one students will continue their training at institutions in the state of Tennessee, and an additional 16 students will train at institutions in the southern Appalachian region. Seven members of the Class of 2018 will remain at Quillen College of Medicine for their residencies.

Almost half of the Class of 2018 will enter primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology) and four students will enter emergency medicine.

A number of students matched to highly competitive specialty programs including anesthesiology (4), dermatology (2), orthopedic surgery (4), ophthalmology (3), radiation oncology (1), diagnostic radiology (3) and urology (1).

Two students will complete their residency training through military service.

Members of the Class of 2018 will attend residency at institutions across the country, including ETSU, the University of Tennessee, the University of Kentucky, Wake Forest University and Vanderbilt University.
