    Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) announced he will host the 9th Annual Military Service Academy Day on Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Kingsport Center for Higher Education in Kingsport, 300 West Market St. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m.

    Congressman Roe will host the 9th Annual Military Service Academy Day to assist those interested in applying for any U.S. Service Academy. Those who attend will have an opportunity to speak with representatives from the United States Air Force Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy & Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC.

    Tennessee residents between the ages of 17 and 23 may apply to any of the four service academies if they meet eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character. The four service academies are the Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

    Tennesseans interested in being nominated to one of the four Academies for the Class of 2023 should apply by November 1, 2018. The nomination packet can be found on the Congressman’s website.

    Visitors to have the opportunity to observe sorghum cane being processed into molasses using a mule-powered mill. The mules will be out turning the cast iron rollers squeezing out the delectable juices to be boiled down into molasses. Just to watch the mule work is worth a visit to the site! While activities will take place all day, Oscar, his crew, and the mules will be milling the cane in the earlier part of the day, so be sure to come during the morning hours.

    Visitors can enjoy touring the historic structures of the property that will take you back to the 1800s. Spend some time in the cabin as delicious open hearth cooking can be enjoyed. The historic cave will be open for everybody of all ages to explore and find their inner spelunker. The Model A Mac’s car club will be on site displaying their antique cars for visitors to see and ask questions about. There will also be several local vendors selling homemade crafts.

    Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children twelve and under, and kids under 3 are free. As always, members of the Tipton Haynes Historical Association are FREE. Tipton Haynes State Historic Site is a Tennessee Historical Commission State-Owned Historic Site.

    Sycamore Shoals Monument to be rededicated

    On September 15 at 1:00 PM, the John Sevier-Sarah Hawkins and Bonny Kate Chapters DAR will rededicate the Sycamore Shoals Monument located in Elizabethton, TN. Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) members will participate as well as the SAR Color Guard. Children of the American Revolution (CAR) will also assist in the ceremony.

    The monument was restored last year by Mary Ruden. A concrete base surrounding the monument was added this year. With the help of the Elizabethton Fire Department, the river rock that had been missing from the top of the 13-foot high monument for many years, was reset.

    The public is invited to attend. Limited parking is available across from the monument at West G Street.

    Spike it Up Tweetsie Challenge

    Johnson City Parks and Recreation is offering a new way to improve fitness for runners, hikers and bicyclists 18 and older. The eight-week Spike it Up Tweetsie Challenge will run from Sept. 16-Nov. 10 and costs just $8 per person.

    Each week, participants will set goals to hike, run and/or ride on Johnson City’s Tweetsie Trail for 150 minutes. The program will include a kickoff meeting, group excursions like geocaching, and a special celebration at the program’s conclusion. Everyone will receive a Spike it Up T-shirt.

    Register in person at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., by Monday, Sept. 17.

    Fifth Annual Bell Ringing honoring Constitution Week

    On Sunday, September 16th, the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), are hosting their Fifth Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week.  The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library.  The program will include a ceremony honoring local soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I, the David Crockett High School choir, the Over Mountain Men, and more.  Bring your chairs and bells that Sunday and “make a joyful noise” as America celebrates the Constitution.

    Senior Services at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., invites those 50 and older to a free, six-part series about preventing falls. Johnson City Medical Center Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator Heatherly Sifford will lead the sessions designed to help participants stay independent and active.

    The sessions are from 1-2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 18-Oct. 23.

    Sept. 18: Program overview with tips for living at home safely. A physical therapist will assist with balance and strength exercises.

    Sept. 25: Benefits and barriers to regular exercise. A physical therapist will address mobility issues, moving safely and safety alarm systems.

    Oct. 2: Fall hazards and solutions, safe clothing and strength exercises.

    Oct. 9: A vision specialist will explain how vision plays a role in keeping balance. Tips for selecting the right footwear.

    Oct. 16: A pharmacist will talk about how medications may contribute to falls.

    Oct. 23: Injury prevention, navigating in inclement weather, and getting out and about safely.
