The Johnson City Public Library will offer a paper flowers workshop on Thursday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the second floor Buffalo Mountain Room. Individuals of all skill levels are welcome to learn how to craft a variety of delightful paper flowers.     The Johnson City Parks and Recreation Job Fair will be held from 5-7 p.m. at Keystone Community Center, 601 Bert St.

    Available positions include:

    · Maintenance – Seasonal maintenance employees will be responsible for, but not limited to: mowing, edging, ball field preparation, limited equipment operation, and event setup. Knowledge of basic work etiquette and manual labor required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license to apply.

    · Programming – Summer youth program assistants will supervise and facilitate activities for children ages 6-16 in a day-camp setting. All applicants must be able to communicate effectively, have general knowledge of recreational activities, and be able to work uninterrupted for seven weeks.

    · Lifeguards – Lifeguards conduct safety surveillance of all pools and slides and are also responsible for upkeep of pools and slides including vacuuming, sanitizing, and general janitorial duties. All candidates should be lifeguard certified by the American Red Cross to apply. If a qualified lifeguard applicant is not certified, Parks and Recreation will certify the candidate upon completion of a proficiency swim test.

    · Athletics – Positions available include soccer referees for youth programs, umpires for youth and adult softball, softball scorekeepers and tennis instructors for youth and adult programming. General knowledge of sports rules required. Some training provided.

    Family Book Club at the Johnson City Public Library: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

    Families of school age children are invited to the Johnson City Public Library Storytime Room on February 8 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.  This story follows Meg, who with the help of some friends, must journey through space and time to find her long-lost father. Registration is required for this free program and can be completed by calling Youth Services at 434-4458 or by visiting the Event Calendar at www.jcpl.org. At least one person registered per family must be eight to eighteen years old. Children eight to twelve years old may still register individually as they would for other book clubs.

    Tail Waggin’ Tutors at The Washington County Gray Library February 9th, 4-5 p.m with Bennett, the Gordon Setter. This program encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won’t laugh at them if they make a mistake or stumble over a word, but rather lie next to them and enjoy the story being read to them. The children learn to associate reading with being with the dog, and begin to view reading in a positive way. Over time, the child’s reading ability and confidence can improve because they are practicing their skills, which will make them enjoy reading even more.     Looking for a new local author to read? Come and meet Jonesborough resident Robert T. Jones at Gray Library on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. His new novel, Gargaphia: Where History Means Murder, is a fast-paced suspense thriller, says Jones.

    Jones describes himself as an author, ancient military historian, wildlife philanthropist, green business creator, and hobby farmer. He stays very active with several nonprofit groups, traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and writing in different genres for a diverse readership.

    Carver Recreation Center, 322 W. Watauga Ave., invites all ages to celebrate Black History Month from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. This event will feature a presentation on black history and recognize several local African-American entrepreneurs. Afterward, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy Taste of the Community and sample some of the finest soul food dishes in town.     Join the Jonesborough Kiwanis Club for their 50th Annual Spaghetti Dinner to support the local community. This fundraiser is designed to give back to the kids and schools in our area. Every penny made goes right back to the community. The Kiwanis Club serves the children of Washington County and is a supporter of Jonesborough events and activities. They have been serving children and families in the local community for over 90 years.

     

    The dinner will be held on February 24th from 4:00-7:30 p.m. at the Jonesborough Middle School. The dinner is all you can eat which includes spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. For adults, it is $10.00 and for children under 10, it is $5.00. Carry out is also available.
