    The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Wednesday details regarding its men’s basketball “Meet Your Seat” event, which will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. inside Freedom Hall.

    The event provides fans and those interested in season tickets an opportunity to see available seating opportunities inside Freedom Hall and purchase tickets for the upcoming campaign that night. Current season ticket holders are also invited to attend and check out the view from their seats for the new season.

    Season tickets for the 2018-19 campaign are still available starting at $110 each. A drawing for an autographed basketball from Forbes will go to one lucky fan who purchases season tickets at the event on Oct. 16. ETSU Athletic staff members will be on site to answer questions and assist fans in purchasing season tickets.

    “Art and Arias” will be presented by the East Tennessee State University Opera Theatre next week.

    The Opera Theatre Ensemble from ETSU’s Department of Music will perform musical numbers from an assortment of operas, including “Don Giovanni” by W.A. Mozart and “Les contes d’Hoffmann” by Jacques Offenbach.

    The ETSU Opera Theatre is directed by Karen Smith, lecturer of voice in the Department of Music.

    The performance will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Reece Museum.

    Tickets are free and the event is open to the public.

    The Student Veterans Association at East Tennessee State University and Mountain Empire Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MECMOAA) will co-host the annual Maj. Stephen T. Sharar Run for the Dogs 5K on Saturday, Oct. 20.

    The 5K race will be held on ETSU’s campus and will begin adjacent to Jack Vest Drive, behind Knight’s Pizza. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. followed by the race at 10 a.m. Runners are encouraged to bring their dogs.

    All proceeds from the event will benefit the “Puppies Behind Bars” program, which places professionally trained dogs with combat veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan who have suffered a physical injury, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

General admission is $25 for early registration and $30 the day of the race. T-shirts are included in registration and can be picked up before or after the race.

    Niswonger Children’s Hospital’s fourth annual Scarecrow Skedaddle & Shindig will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Founder’s Park in Johnson City. The event features a 5K race, a one-mile fun run and a 200-meter modified race that accommodates children who might otherwise not participate in traditional runs.

    Following the races, Niswonger Children’s Hospital will host a shindig at the park’s amphitheater or pavilion. The after-party will include agility challenges, dancing and educational and health-related booths for children and their families to explore.

    Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site will be partnering with S. R. S Paranormal to offer the public an opportunity to paranormally investigate the most historic site in Tennessee.

    S. R. S Paranormal will be guiding the investigations on October 26 (Friday), 27 (Saturday), and 29 (Monday) from 7pm to 10pm.

    Reservations are required prior to each night investigation. To make a reservation, you can either call the historic site at 423-926-3631 or email tiptonhaynes@embarqmail.com. There will be a max of 20 participants per night and all participants must be 13 years or older. Admission will be $15 for each participant.

    Historic Downtown Jonesborough will be filled with ghosts, ghouls, and everything in between on Saturday, October 27 with the Haunted Half Marathon and Annual Halloween Haunts and Happenings. There will be something offered for everyone and every age as Tennessee’s Oldest Town celebrates Halloween.

    Kick off the day by taking part in the 10th Annual Haunted Half Marathon at 10 a.m. This race has been named by Runners World as one of the Top 20 Perfect Half Marathons and Top 10 Awesome Race Shirts. If running 13 miles is a little scary, you can gather some friends and choose the Boo to Brew Relay option presented by S. E. Callahan. There is also a Monster Mile for young runners this year starting at 10:30 a.m. Also enjoy music from Seven Mile Mushroom in front of the Courthouse during the event.     Jonesborough has hosted Halloween Haunts and Happenings for over 40 years and the event provides fun for the whole family. From treat stops, activities, games, music and more, it will all be happening throughout the day from 4 to 8 p.m.

    The Spooky Pooch Palooza will begin at 4 p.m. in front of the Courthouse. Bring your pups down for doggie trick-or-treating and a costume contest. The costume contest will be offered for small and large dogs and prizes will be awarded for the following categories: Funniest, Scariest, Most Creative, Best Dog/Owner Combo and Best Dog Pair/Team.

    The Food City Costume Contest is returning this year and will take place starting at 6 p.m. on the Main Stage in front of the Courthouse. Prizes and gift certificates will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the following age groups: 3 and under, 4-6, 7-9, 10-17, 18 & up and Group Category.

    The Flashlight Haunted Egg Hunt will end the evening and is the perfect activity for children 10 and up starting at 7:30 p.m. in Mill Spring Park. Bring a flashlight and search the park for hidden black and orange eggs filled with candy. You might bump in to some spooky characters along the way, so be on the lookout!

    Parking and shuttle service will be offered during this event and is recommended. Parking is available at Jonesborough Elementary School for $5/car with free shuttle to and from the Jonesborough Visitors Center.     Nature Program Coordinator Connie Deegan will host “Behold the Bat,” a presentation designed to help attendees learn about the benefits and struggles of one of our most mysterious groups of mammals. The presentation will also address the do’s and don’ts of attracting them to your property with a bat house.

    Families are welcome to this presentation on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Winged Deer Park’s outdoor classroom (park in the Disc Golf parking lot and look for signs). Cost is $2 per person. Registration not required.

    East Tennessee State University’s Department of Physical Therapy invites area residents to dress up and get out to race in celebration of Halloween during a Trot-or-Treat 3K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9 a.m.

    Check-in for this race, formerly known as the Zombie Run, opens at 7 a.m. at Tri-Hall Field behind Governors, Centennial and Davis residence halls. The race route will be half on campus roads and half on the University Woods trails behind campus.

    “We’ve changed the theme this year from Zombie Run to Trot-or-Treat to make it more kid-friendly,” said Dr. Trish King, professor and chair of the ETSU Department of Physical Therapy. “We wanted to make it more fun and less scary – but still scary enough – in hopes that more people would bring kids.”

    Registration is $25 for adults, $15 for college students and youth ages 10-18, and free for children through age 9. Proceeds will go toward the Marquette Challenge, a non-profit fundraiser in support of continuing evidence-based research and education in the field of Physical Therapy.
