January 4, 2018 – January 5, 2018The Johnson City Public Library will host a Self-Nurturing Journal-Making Makerspace for adults on Thursday, January 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the second floor Buffalo Mountain Room. Participants will learn how to make their own simple journals using creative watercolor techniques, embellishments, and expressions. No skills required. All materials will be provided. January 9, 2018 – January 10, 2018eens ages 12-18 are invited to participate in the Johnson City Public Library’s monthly teen book club. On Tuesday, January 9, participants will meet from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room to discuss The Smell of Other People’s Houses by Bonnie Sue Hitchcock.
The Smell of Other People’s Houses tells the tale of four very different teens whose lives become entangled as they grow up in Alaska during its transition into statehood. Following the book discussion, participants will tour the Native Voices traveling exhibit located on the second floor of the library. The traveling exhibition examines the concepts of health and wellness among contemporary American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians. This event is free to attend. The first ten participants to register will receive a copy of the book to keep. Interested participants may register for the book club at the library, by phone, or via the online event calendar at www.jcpl.org. January 17, 2018Johnson City Public Library will host an open house on Wednesday, January 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to meet the new library director, Robin Westphal, take tours to watch the recently installed automated materials handler in action, and witness the unveiling of an art piece donated to the library. Live music and refreshments will be also be on hand.

The program will be held in the Jones Meeting Room on Thursday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m. No registration is required for this free program. Materials are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. January 19, 2018Starting January 19, the Johnson City Public Library will host a monthly knitting circle on the third Friday of every month from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the second floor Buffalo Mountain Room. Yarn crafters of all skill levels and interests are invited to bring their current projects to these events, which are free and open to the public. Library staff will be on hand to direct patrons to collection materials for those learning to knit or looking for inspiration for future projects.
