Daniel Boone’s JROTC Physical Fitness team took home top honors in this year’s annual Goliath obstacle race at Doe River Gorge in Hampton. Boone’s team of Jackson Ramsey, Logan Clontz, Atlas Batten, and Jonathan Castro finished first overall with a time of 2 hours and 27 minutes.

The grueling competition covered 6.5 miles of the Gorge’s roughest terrain. From start to finish Goliath tested the endurance and grit of more than 400 participants ranging in age from 13 to 67. The race started with a 500-foot incline within the first mile and ended with a 100-yard mud trench.
In between, participants battled the elements of water, conquered their fear of heights, and navigated through steep mountains all while carrying a tire throughout the entire race.

Daniel Boone entered 28 total runners. An additional 11 cadets volunteered their help at various checkpoints. Every cadet successfully completed the race and earned an achievement medal.
