Science Hill’s Jenna Hutchins won her second cross country state championship in record-breaking fashion last Thursday.
Hutchins blitzed the 5K course at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville, Tennessee, last week, breaking several records en route to the TSSAA Large School Girls State Championship. The junior’s time of 16:30.8 put her over a minute and a half ahead of the runner-up and is currently the fastest 5K time run by a high school girl on Tennessee soil.
The mark is also a new record for a girl at the state cross country meet, breaking the previous mark by nearly 30 seconds. Hutchins’ latest triumph came the day after US Milesplit ranked Hutchins as the No. 1 girls’ cross country runner in the nation.
Needless to say, Hutchins’ fifth sub-17 minute run of the year is also a new record for the course at Sanders Ferry Park. Daniel Boone’s Kamryn Wingfield finished 14th in the meet to earn all-state honors while David Crockett’s girls – led by Breanna Dunn and Rachel Dulaney – finished sixth in the team competition. Dunn and Dulaney finished 38th and 39th respectively.
In the Large School boys’ race, Daniel Boone’s Conner Wingfield capped an outstanding season with an all-state performance. Wingfield finished 15th to pace the Trailblazers, who notched a seventh-place finish in the team competition.
