University School students, teachers and administrators gathered on the lawn in front of their school building last Friday morning to plant a tree in observance of Arbor Day.

The whole school formed a ring around a hole where a red maple tree stood. Lennox Banner and Pierce Adler, both students at the school, read a proclamation before the tree was officially planted. ETSU arborist Travis Watson assisted the students with the project, which generated plenty of excitement on a blustery morning.

Arbor Day, which is observed each year on the first Friday of March, is intended to encourage people to plant more trees and has been observed in Tennessee since 1875.
