On a cold Thanksgiving Day morning in Johnson City, a record 4,254 turned out to take part in the annual Turkey Trot 5K.

Runners assembled at the corner of State of Franklin and Legion Street to began the race, which wound its way through the streets of Downtown Johnson City before wrapping up inside TVA Credit Union Ballpark. Some participants donned extravagant costumes – father and son John and Harrison Wright dressed as a Thanksgiving table and the Mayflower, respectively – while others brought their dogs along for the run.

Runners and walkers of all ages showed up to get the blood flowing and land a preemptive strike against the caloric onslaught that awaited them back home. When the dust settled, Nick Horne was crowned the overall winner after setting a blistering pace around the course.

Prior to the event, dancers from Ridgeview Elementary School in Washington County entertained the crowd with their Turkey Trot dance. Rev. C.H. Charlton gave the invocation, Congressman Phil Roe led participants in the Pledge of Allegiance and a parachuter landed near the starting line with the American flag at the conclusion of the National Anthem.
