Ms. Frizzle (principal Mary McIntyre) had a menagerie of characters ready to ride her magic school bus last Wednesday at Cherokee Elementary School. There was Geronimo Stilton (Benjamin Boone), the namesake and editor of ‘The Rodent’s Gazette’ in Edizioni Piemme’s series. The Cat in the Hat (Shreyas Singh) and a young Abe Lincoln (Adam Miller) were there, as were Fancy Nancy (Lucy Smith) and Jack, of Beanstalk fame (Tucker Britt).
It was all part of a fun focus on books in the wake of TN Ready testing.
“We’re always pushing books,” said McIntyre, who calls reading, “my main number one leisure activity. I’m all about fiction, usually crime, and thriller – that’s just my escape.”
“I want kids to have that same love,” McIntyre said, “and I think if you connect fun things with books it really helps them make connections.”
Cherokee’s PTA sponsored a book exchange during the week, allowing students to bring in books they had already read or outgrown. Thursday, every child was able to get a book that was new to him or her.

Kindergarten teachers Kelly Bowman, left, as Farmer Brown from ‘Click Clack Moo’ and Anna Hardgrave as Ladybug Girl, from the series of the same name.
