The Johnson City Area Home Builders Association staged the sixth-annual Battle of the Build at Northeast State Community College last Saturday.

The event tasked high schools from around the region to create, design and build projects for the competition. Science Hill, Daniel Boone and David Crockett all participated in the event, which serves as a valuable workforce development program.

Last Saturday, teams from each school arrived at Northeast State and set up their projects to be judged. Dan Mitchell, Randy Noel, Charlotte Peak, Jimmy Franks and Carl Harris made up the panel of judges from around the country that inspected the projects and learned more about them from the students.

During the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event, a pizza oven built by the students from David Crockett earned the Chairman’s Choice Award and tied for third place. The portable oven is designed to make wood-fired pizza and will be used in the future for fundraising activities at the school.

Meanwhile, Science Hill entered a fire pit surrounded by a seating area while Daniel Boone entered a cookout area complete with a grill. Building materials for the projects were purchased through sponsorships from members of the JCAHBA.
