Close to about 550 athletes with special needs from schools and adult-enrichment programs in Carter, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington Counties participated in the Northeast Tennessee’s Area 3 Special Olympics 2017 Track and Field Games last week. Garrison Buchanan, from Science Hill High School, was given the honor of lighting the Special Olympics cauldron. Science Hill student Kyle Marshall sang the national anthem.

Liberty Bell Middle School students Hector Gomez Ortega, Dominick Hensley and Jabrayan Anderson led the crowd in the Special Olympics Oath: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” To start the day, Johnson City Vice-Mayor Jenny Brock led the crowd in a prayer.
