Borla Performance Industries hosted the second-annual Soap Box Derby last Saturday, allowing several young racers to put their sleek cars to the test.

The Kiwanis Club of Johnson City joined forces with the Kiwanis Club of Erwin to put on the event. Participants loaded into their cars at the top of the downhill track and allowed gravity and engineering to take over during the 150-foot race to the finish line.

Soap Box cars can be built by ordering a kit and putting the vehicle together. From there, figuring out how to configure the car, maneuver it down the hill makes the difference between winning and losing.

Roanin Buchanan, who raced in the inaugural Soap Box Derby last year, was the big winner in the super stock division. Ava Freshour won the trophy in the stock division.
