In honor of American Heart Month, volunteers from the American Heart Association were at the Niswonger Children’s Hospital on Friday morning to begin donating red caps to babies born at the facility.

The Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign is a nationwide initiative that started about three years ago, and local AHA volunteers expect to distribute 562 hats to babies born during the month of February.

“It’s just a way for us to help mothers be aware that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans, and 1 in 3 women will die of heart disease,” said Kim Hall, Executive Chair of the Go Red for Women event. “Eighty percent of that is treatable, so if we can teach people when they’re young to have healthy eating habits, be more fit, be more active and be more aware, then we can combat those numbers and prevent more heart disease in the future.”
